Warrior School

In my imagination, I see… Serena and I crowded into the front seat of our silver highway patrol SUV. We both shout, “SHOTGUN” and strap ourselves in to the front bucket seat together. She’s in the middle. Our angels perch on top. “Where are we going today?” we ask Officer Guide. “The Windy City, of course!” he rumbles. Simultaneously we all put on our mirrored sunglasses. Serena and I have our long hair tucked up in police caps. We have on serious faces. We are in training to be fierce warriors! “Wait a minute!” I yell. I jump out of the vehicle and slap a bumper sticker on the back window that says, “IN GOD WE TRUST”. I hop back in and my Lord nods approvingly at me. I nod back. Serena gets inspired and gives a long blast on her horn. Our Lord frowns at her and says, “I have told you to lean out the window when you do that!” She nods seriously at him and says, “Right.” He nods back. The radio crackles with a voice from dispatch, “People are calling for you everywhere.” Serena picks up the mic and says crisply, “On it!” I flip on the sirens and off we roll.

But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.

Psalm 18:6 NLT

Pocket Pals

Eve: I love You so much, Father! I just want to ride around in your pocket all day!

Father: You are already in my heart. Why do you want to ride in my pocket?

Eve: I just do. It sounds fun!

Serena: Me too!!!

Father: Very well…

In the Wind

In my imagination, I see… Serena and I holding hands and swinging our arms skipping down the Holiness Highway. We’re twins, about 8 years old, dressed alike in little cotton dresses. I’m barefoot, she’s wearing combat boots. Our hair is bouncing and we’re laughing. It’s bright and sunny out with clear blue skies. Daisies fill the ditches. Bluebirds are twittering. Woodpeckers are pecking. Sunlight sparkles through the warrior angels of light standing motionless along the Sacred Way with their backs to us, as they face out toward the wide world.

We hear a vroom vroom revving up of a motorcycle idling behind us. We turn to see our Lord Guide in his CHiPs uniform. He’s looking around at the forest beyond and the Golden City ahead. When he sees us spot him he gives a casual salute and revs the engine again. We run to him and climb up on the bike. Serena perches on the handle bars squealing and laughing. I prefer to sit in back holding tightly to his waist. I’m scared and excited! He says in a booming voice, “Did somebody call for ACCELERATION?” We laugh and laugh. “Lord, tell us your secret name!” He says, “My real name is….” but we can’t make it out because of the wind in our ears as we race toward eternity.

There will be a highway of holiness called the Sacred Way. The impure will not be permitted on this road, but it will be accessible to God’s people. And not even fools will lose their way.

Lovesick

He escorts me to the banquet hall; it’s obvious how much he loves me. Strengthen me with raisin cakes, refresh me with apples, for I am weak with love. His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.
